Take a very easy hike to a hidden red sand beach and take a dip in a swimming hole guarded from waves by natural rock formations.
Begin by entering 5052 Uakea Rd, Hana, HI into your maps app on your phone. The road will be a small dead end by the ocean, with the end of it being a gate leading into the Travasa Hotel. Parking is free on either side of the road and you will probably see other people parked there. Note: there are no signs indicating the trail.
Start this short hike by walking south on the road towards the Travasa Hotel gate. Just before the gate on the left, you will see a fairly large field with two light posts. The trail is a little hard to see, but it begins just to the right of the first light post. See the last image above with the arrow for a clear indication on where to begin.
From here, the trail continues along a moderately steep cliff that parallels the ocean. It is a very easy hike, but you will want to wear shoes with good traction as there are some small but steep hills. Water shoes are ok. Hike along this dirt path for about five minutes and you will soon reach a bend on the trail that goes left, and from here you can see the small inlet for the red sand beach.
Once at the beach, you can lay a towel out and relax or go swimming. There is a small swimming hole that is protected by natural rock formations from the waves, making it a great place to take a dip. It is especially refreshing midday, when the hot Hawaiian sun is overhead. You can also choose to climb out on the rock formations, although wearing water shoes is recommended as the rocks can be sharp. However, if you wish to see this place without it being crowded like it often is in the summer, get here early in the morning. Since it faces east, sunrises here are particularly stunning, and you will most likely be there alone.

Reviews
Stopping here was the only thing that made The Road to Hana worth it. Not many people were there or know about it which is what we always look for. Relaxing, quiet place to get away from all the tourists that don't know about this place. 🤐 keep it that way

This beach is so pretty. The red sand is a wonderful contrast to the blue water. You can't spend enough time here.

If you're able to find it, this beach will be one of the most rewarding you'll ever spend time on. It's not a long walk, the beach is beautiful, and there's always interesting people spending time on the beach.

Due to how difficult it was to find the trail I almost didn't make it to Red Sand Beach but am so glad some helpful construction workers pointed me in the right direction as this turned out to be the highlight of my time in Hana! Just a heads up, this is a nudist friendly beach so don't be surprised if you see fellow sunbathers in their birthday suits!
