Discover San Pedro's hidden gem, the Sunken City. This spot is an awesome L.A. adventure, perfect for watching the sunset, exploring, and taking photos!
In 1929, at the southern tip of San Pedro, a landslide destroyed a neighborhood nearly 40,000 square feet in size, which eventually slid into the ocean. Today the area has been fenced off and the ruins that are still leftover are known as the “Sunken City.” While there, you will find remnants of foundations and piping from that old neighborhood. The site is an awesome place to explore, take photos or just watch the sunset.
To get there, head over to Point Fermin Park in San Pedro and park in the lot. Walk towards the south end of the parking lot where you'll see a big fence with a patch of dirt on the other side. What you have to do now is climb under, or over, that fence. Take your pick. Once you're over (or under) just walk along the patch of dirt and you'll start to see the graffiti.
Street artists have decorated these urban ruins with lots of graffiti so you can't miss it. This place can get a bit crowded with people around sunset so if you're looking for tranquility, you'll have to go during the day or morning. If you don't mind making a few friends, go for the sunset and bring some beverages!
