Photograph Anemone Sea Cave
Bar Harbor, Maine
Description
Added by Hillary + Matt
Few are aware of the stunning sea cave located beneath Acadia National Park's coastline, but it's there - if you know where to look.
The hiking trail to Anemone Cave - a formerly popular attraction in Acadia National Park - was decommissioned years ago after NPS officials found that foot traffic there may have been to blame for declining numbers of sea anemones within the cave. As a result, rangers stopped acknowledging it to visitors (unless asked), removed signs and handrails leading to the site, and wiped its location from all park maps and brochures.
Today, visitors can still access the cave, but at their own risk; there's a brief window at low tide when its entrance is passable.
To get there, park in the overlook parking lot on Schooner Head Road. From there, head off-path and down a series of boulders (be careful - they can be very slippery) and into the cave. Make sure to avoid the water inside the cave and to only visit during low tide.
WARNING: Many visitors have needed to be rescued or have drowned when the rising tide trapped them inside.
