A little more technical yet highly rewarding, hiking Angel's Landing during the winter allows you to experience Zion with the magical touch of snow
The popular Angel's Landing hike often sees thousands of people in the summer, making it a very crowded trail which can be annoying. Opt to camp in Zion and do this trail in the winter and the rewards are vast! With less crowds and no need for a shuttle, you can take your time and enjoy the new element that the snow provides. Much like normally hiking Angel's Landing, this isn't for the faint of heart or anyone afraid of heights. Rent Yaktrax and Microspikes from Zion Adventure Company in Springdale for $7 and $10 respectively, and 50% off that rate for subsequent days. This is a steal and they proved to be invaluable on the last 0.5 mile. There wasn't much of a need for them through the first area of switchbacks, and most of our group didn't put them on until Walter's Wiggles. I highly recommend water resistant gloves as well, as the chains are cold and do get slippery in some spots. At a decent pace, you could do this hike in 4 hours.
If you want good lighting for photos, I highly recommend starting around 1:30pm. This will give you some time to get to the top and relax, take in and enjoy the view. You can then make your way down around 4-4:30pm and still make it down before dark.
Return your Microspikes at Zion Adventure Company before 6pm and only pay for one day.
Overall, I highly recommend doing this hike in the winter. I've never done it in the summer, but I hate high temps and to be honest I think I'll only be coming back in the winter!
