7 Hikes You Need to Do in the Phoenix Area

Arizona is a great state for hiking. While northern Arizona gets a lot of love, Phoenix locals don't have to go far to find awesome trails. Check out these 7 popular hikes near the greater Phoenix area.
1. The Flatiron
The Flatiron is an epic rock formation visible on the skyline east of Mesa. It marks the edge of the Superstition Mountains and offers a great day hike to the top. This is a steep hike and can be a great workout.
2. North Mountain
North Mountain is an awesome short, steep hike in north Phoenix. This spot is less crowded than nearby Piestewa Peak, but still a great workout. From the top you have a great view of Phoenix and most of the valley.
3. South Mountain
South Mountain is an awesome place to get a view of the Phoenix area in the evening. This is a popular area with plenty of trails to choose from. It's perfect for anyone in south-central phoenix looking for an easily accessible trail.
4. Piestewa Peak
This is an awesome workout for Phoenix locals who don't want to spend a lot of time on the road. Once you're at the top you'll have a great view of the whole city. Consider an early morning hike or a hike in the evening.
5. Camelback Mountain
Similar to Piestewa Peak, this is a great hike for those that don't want to spend much time on the road outside of Phoenix. It's conveniently located and easily accessible, providing a great quick workout and awesome views of the city.
6. Lower Salt River Nature Trail
This is an old unmaintained trail located on the Salt River east of Mesa. It's a great way to escape the crowds and an even better way to find wildlife on the Salt River. This area is home to the Salt River Wild Horses, and they're pretty easy to see if you stay for long enough. You can also find Eagles and a wide variety of other wildlife as well.
7. Waterfall Trail in the White Tank Mountains
Easily the most popular hike in the White Tank Mountains, the waterfall trail offers your best chance of finding running water in the west valley. It only flows after heavy rain, but this is an easy short hike into a cool rock formation in the White Tanks.
