Backcountry Ski at Blanket Glacier Chalet

Sicamous, British Columbia

Description

Added by Matt Ford

Get back to the basics and experience a week of winter in an authentic ski chalet tucked away in the Monashee Mountains. There is terrain for all abilities and average snowfall is over 25 meters.

At Blanket Glacier Chalet, experience some of the best skiing in the area while taking time off from the rest of the world. This is not a strictly luxury experience, but you won't be roughing it, either: plan on lots delicious food, skiing your heart out, relaxing in the wood-fired sauna and enjoying a pint of Mt. Begbie Tall Timber Ale.

The short helicopter ride to the chalet provides excellent views of the Columbia River and surrounding mountains. Make sure to pack only what you need, as there is a weight limit for the helicopter, and plan on skiing right from the moment you disembark – once you see the terrain around the chalet, you will want to make the absolute most of you week!

The hut is small, rustic, and homey, and as such there is no WiFi or cell reception. A separate drying room was recently added to the hut, so there is no need to worry about cold, wet boots in the mornings.

During your stay, you'll be asked to help with chores, like wood chopping and gathering water from the nearby creek. This might sound a bit odd, given that you're on vacation, but it's a great opportunity to bond with your friends.

Guiding service is available and highly recommended if you're not familiar with winter backcountry travel, and catering is also available.

This is a very popular destination for those that know about it, so start early when planning this trip. Visit Blanket Glacier Chalet's website for more details, and contact the Schaffers to find a week that works for you. Then start sending out the invites – the chalet can sleep up to 14 people!
