Backcountry Ski at Fremont Pass
Leadville, Colorado
Description
Added by Madison Sankovitz
This is an amazing area 15 minutes from Leadville that offers lots of slopes to explore.
Starting at 11,319 feet of elevation, you can choose which direction to head into the backcountry. Park at the pull-off area at the bend in the road. From here, you can head into the woods to the right (there are usually tracks from other skiers to follow) or follow Trail Rd. to reach some peaks further from the highway.
Many slopes are available to ski along the right side of the basin. To ski steeper slopes, hike above tree line. There is a nice open slope just to the right of the parking area. To ski less steep slopes, stay within the trees. Do not ski up Chalk Mountain, which is across the street from Climax Mine at the top of the pass, because it is private property.
Remember to always check avalanche danger and monitor the snow conditions as you go! Here is a link to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which has information on snow forecasts and observations throughout the state: Colorado Avalanche Information Center
