This 10 mile hike in Shenandoah National Park is a two day, one night backpacking trip. The forested trail provides shade in the summer and colorful foliage in the fall.

This hike is best done as a two-day, one-night backpacking trip, however it can be done as a day hike if you don't wish to backpack.

Jeremy’s Run is a beautifully forested 10 mile roundtrip hike with numerous stream-crossing. The trailhead starts at the Elkwallow Picnic area, at about mile 24 of Skyline drive. You can park your car there overnight, but be sure to obtain a backcountry permit at the visitor’s center.

To begin, head down the trail for about 100 yards and turn left onto the Appalachian Trail. Hike south on the AT for about 0.2 miles. From there you can take a right onto Jeremy’s Trail. Along the way, the trail snakes back and forth over a stream, which you will cross about 10-15 times. (I lost count after the 8th crossing so I don’t know the exact amount). It’s important to note, in the spring or winter, the stream can be quite deep and crossings should be approached with care. This portion of the hike is largely downhill.

Yow will hike for about 5 miles until you see great spots to set up camp. Some sites are spacious enough to fit groups as large as 10. If you cross the stream at a waterfall, you’ve gone too far and should turn back for the campsites. Set up you camping gear for the night and enjoy Shenandoah.

In the morning, after packing up, follow the trail back the way you came. Remember, you have to make up for the elevation lost on the way there, so day 2 can be a bit strenuous. However, it’s nothing that an advanced beginner couldn’t handle. Just drink lots of water and take breaks when needed.

If you’re looking to do a loop instead, you can continue on to Knob Mountain trail which will lead you back to the picnic area after a total of 14 miles.

Nice day hike that is perfect if you’re looking to just put in a bunch of effort. No big views but plenty of space/time for walking!

I did the hike in a day and from the Elkwallow Picnic Grounds it is very close to a 15 mile hike. It was the longest hike I have ever personally done. Not a whole lot of "payoff" type views, but it's a loop trail in the great Shenandoah!

Did this as a backpacking one night camping trip in mid November. The stream crossing went well and water low enough to step on rocks to get over. We saw three bears going out which was awesome! Plenty of fresh water, so be sure to bring some type of water treatment. Definitely need trekking poles to help balance at stream crossings and stepping over all the rocks along the path (especially in the fall with all the leaves!) Highly recommend this trip, will go back out one day to make it the waterfall. Beautiful!
