Big Wall Climbing El Potrero Chico

El Potrero Chico (“Little Corral”) is located north of Monterrey, in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, just under two miles outside of the small town of Hidalgo. A straight drive down I-35 from San Antonio TX through Laredo totaling around 5.5 hours this can be done in a short three day weekend. A permit is required for driving your own vehicle into the country and can be obtained at the border or at a Banjercito bank in Austin TX. Make sure you have everything in order before making the drive or you will be denied entry. For a faster border crossing try the little town of Colombia just West of Laredo. Another option would be to fly into Monterrey and then take a taxi for under $100US to EPC or arrange for the lodge to pick you up with even a grocery stop along the way.

El Potrero Chico is a world renowned big wall sport climbing destination, with multi-pitch sport routes ranging from 5.7 to 5.14 and up to 23 pitches. There are several very safe camp grounds/lodges such as La Posada within a short 10 minute hike to the base of any climb in the area. Camping is extremely cheap and the rooms aren't bad either. Each facility has a community kitchen with everything you need to cook or bar-b-q and most of them also have swimming pools.

There is something for every climber here, from spires to overhangs to big wall. With an endless amount of some of the best sport climbing in North America this isn't a place you'll only visit once.
