Virginia's New River Trail State Park is an ideal spot for a leisurely bike ride with the family. And with 57 miles of trail through the Blue Ridge Highlands, and multiple trail heads, you're sure to find a section that's perfect for you.
There are several locations to begin your trek on the New River Trail, but our favorite is the Draper Valley area. The pin on the map will take you right to the parking lot. There is a $5 state park fee and a self-pay envelope station. From here we head south, and after about a mile you catch your first glimpse of the New River. You'll cross several bridges that provide excellent opportunities to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Most of the trail is shaded, and because it's almost perfectly flat, the miles go by quickly.
Horses also use this trail, so be on the lookout. Always yield to the horses. Your best bet is to simply dismount your bike and get off to the side to let the horses pass.
After your ride, be sure to check out the 100 year old Draper Mercantile where you can grab a drink or even a meal.

Reviews
As Kenton says, the trail is flat and it's easy to knock out a lot of miles on this trail. The views of the New River are absolutely gorgeous and there are at least a dozen bridges that you cross throughout the length of the trail. If starting from Draper, a good place to stop for lunch and turn around is at Foster Falls, making for a 38 mile total bike ride.
