Description

Located right by Quanah Parker Lake, Doris Campground is a well-kept, beautiful campground in the incredible Wichita Mountains. For those wishing to explore the Wichita Mountains for at least a couple days, Doris Campground is a great place to spend the night and have access to all the trails, wildlife, and scenery that the Wichita Mountains have to offer.
In the western part of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, nestled right on scenic Quanah Parker Lake is Doris Campground. Doris Campground offers an all-round perfect camping experience in the extraordinary Wichita Mountains whether you are in an RV or tent camping. There are five loops in the campground (A,B,C, D, and E) for single unit camping and there is also a semi-primitive area for tent camping only behind Loop B. All units have picnic tables, fire rings, and grated grills on site. There is a shower complex near Loop C that is extremely well taken care of. Drinking water hydrants and dumpsters are located throughout the campgrounds.
We have stayed at sites #36 and #39 in Loop C. Both are right by Quanah Parker Lake and have excellent lakeside views. They also within walking distance to the bridge to the Environmental Education Center, which is located next to sites #26 and #28 in Loop D. The bridge spans across Quanah Parker Lake and offers amazing opportunities for night sky photographs. Beautiful deer also roam freely around the campgrounds especially near Loop C and D. There is also access to the Little Baldy Mountain Trail from Loop B.
There are 20 semi-primitive tent only sites ($8 per night), 47 single-unit sites without electricity ($10 per night, which is what we stayed at for sites #36 and #39), 23 single-unit sites with electricity ($20 per night). All sites are first come, first serve. Fees are paid before entering the Doris Campground right at the ranger station. Public telephones are also available at the ranger station.

We love this campground! It is full of trees and wildlife, and is an easy hike to Quanah Parker dam with some pretty great views.

One of my favorite places in this part of the country. I've been hiking, climbing an camping in the Wichitas for nearly forty years and it never gets old. Doris Campground does the trick. Limited backcountry permits are available and can be reserved thirty days out.

I stayed here for two night in March and thoroughly enjoyed both the campground and the entirety of Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The campsites are well-maintained and have plenty of room for several tents, if you are with a group as I was. Well worth the visit and I hope to return someday! Tip: Visit near the Visitor Center early in the morning to see two bison who frequently hang out around there.
