Camp at Kelly's Pond, Sam Houston National Forest
Montgomery, Texas
Description
Added by Glen Jarrett
Just a a bit over an hour outside the city of Houston, Kelly's Pond campground is a great spot to head to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a weekend!
Kelly's Pond is a primitive camping area off the beaten path with no potable water or electricity. There is an open grass area around the pond where tent camping is permitted-- as far as I am aware the spots are first-come, first-serve.
Some perks of the location: Proximity to Lake Conroe allows for an afternoon on the lake-- hanging out on the banks, swimming, or canoeing. The Lone Star Hiking Trial also passes near the campground so it is easy to hop on the route and do some hiking. The routes are very flat but scenic as it weaves through the Sam Houston National Forest
Kelly's pond serves as a trail head for the Sam Houston multi-use motorized trail. Many of the campers there had brought dirt bikes and were utilizing the trail throughout the late morning and afternoon. Although the bikes were a bit noisy as they came in and out of the campground, most of the trails were far enough off that the noise was not an issue.
Because the campground is remote and there is no facilities, make sure you have all the gear you need for the weekend! Also be sure to bring trash bags to carry out any waste you have.
One can find directions to the Campground here: http://www.recreation.gov/recreationalAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&facilityId=236806.

Reviews
At first glance this place is perfect but i quickly found it was not for me. I came in November which is deer season. Gunshots at dawn and again at dusk. Scared to walk to trails and be mistaken for a white tail. Also seems to be very popular for motocross which didn’t bother me much because it seems like people were having fun but it is definitely not peaceful in the slightest.
