Camp at Trail's End Campground
Grand Marais, Minnesota
Description
Added by Joe Whitson
Located as far into the Boundary Waters as you can travel by car, Trail's End Campground is truly on the very edge of the wilderness. Famous for excellent fishing, wild berry picking, animals like black bears and moose, and of course canoeing, Trail's End is a great place to spend a few days or as an entry point to a longer Boundary Waters canoeing experience.
Trail's End Campground is located at the very end of the Gunflint Trail, a remote highway that cuts into the heart of the Minnesota Northwoods. Catch the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais along Highway 61 on the North Shore of Lake Superior. From Grand Marais, you'll wind your way sixty miles along the beautiful wilderness road, a trip that takes about an hour and a half. The campground, which is run by the Superior National Forest, is small and popular, so make reservations ahead of time.
Grand Marais is the closest town, although there is a small restaurant and gift shop at the campground, and there is no cell phone service, so make sure you are prepared to be disconnected for a few days. Don't worry, there are plenty of things to occupy your time. Many of the campsites are located right on the rocky shore of the pristine Seagull Lake and the campground also provides access to Saganaga Lake, a popular Boundary Waters entry point, making canoeing and kayaking the most popular activities (no motors allowed). You can rent canoes at several of the nearby outfitters who will drop off and pick up a canoe at your campsite. Trout, pike, and muskies are abundant, so don't forget your rod and tackle. The water is cold, but great for swimming and cliff jumping on warm days. There are many nearby hiking trails along the Gunflint Trail and if you hit the right season, the ground is literally carpeted with wild blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.
Caution: The bears at this campground have learned to recognize coolers, so keep you're stuff in a trunk where they can't see it or prepare to give up your weekend's worth of bacon.
