Camp in the Alabama Hills
Inyo County, California
Description
Added by Mike O'Hara
The Alabama Hills offer free camping (up to 14-days). Grab your camera for perfect views of Mt. Whitney and the surrounding peaks. This area is also incredible for night photography.
The Alabama Hills Recreation Area is a area owned by BLM and open to the public. Camping is free and you can say for a max of 14 days.
The are has 100+ open desert sites that are shadowed by some of the tallest peaks in the Sierra Nevada range. And if that wasn't enough, the area was the backdrop for many western and SiFi films. If you like free camping and can handle the primitive camp sites, then the Alabama Hills are for you. Plenty of fun to be had!
An easy entrance into the recreation area is from the trailhead to Mobius Arch (cover photo), just west of Lone Pine. If you're looking for more details on the area, head to the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center at 126 S. Main Street to pick up a map prior to heading into Alabama Hills or check out Recreation.gov.

PROS: Great place to camp. Lots of nooks and crannies to call your own. No cell service. CONS: Gunshots in the background. Used toilet paper everywhere. People, PICK UP AFTER YOURSELVES AND LEAVE NO TRACE BEHIND!

Great rock climbing and lots of BLM land to camp.

I spend a lot of time camping throughout this country, and Alabama Hills has to be my favorite spot of all time. It does get VERY windy, which kept us up the nights we were there in May, but the views made it all worth it. There are so many creative and hidden campsites around this place so make sure you really take the time to find your perfect spot. The town nearby has a small grocery store and cell service, but Alabama Hills itself has no services or cell reception.

Just a heads up, it is usually windy here and has minimal cell service. Well worth it though.
