Located outside of Comfort, TX Flat Rock Ranch is a private, 27 mile, mountain biking trail system in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

About 45 miles northwest of San Antonio is Flat Rock Ranch. The ranch has 1300 rugged acres that have been in the same family for over 100 years. They raise Black Angus cattle and Angora goats, in addition to building a 27 mile, single track trail system with a few double track trails as well. The trails wind through typically hill country with some spectacular views, lung-busting hill climbs, sweet downhill, and technical single-track. There really is something for everyone.

We were able to do quite a few loops on the trails. They have the trails signed for some of the race courses and the intersections are numbered with posts to help you figure out where you are. There's both a lower and an upper loop. Our kids had fun riding some of the easier trails, while the adults really got back up into the hills for some technical riding. We were there for 3 days and definitely did not hit all the trails!

They also have a camp ground for those wishing to stay the weekend and ride straight from camp. They have a few water/30 amp electric sites, but we preferred the dry camping spots under the trees. We were joined by a few tent campers, but mostly had the place to ourselves. Each site has a picnic table and a garbage can, shade, and easy access to all the trails. The owner is fabulous, personally greeted us and even brought over some firewood our first afternoon. Great, down to earth people that love to have people come ride the trails.

Flat Rock Ranch also hosts events, so make sure to check Facebook and Twitter to make sure the trails are open and there won't be crazy amounts of people. The mountain biking also shuts down in November for hunting season, since the two sports don't mix overly well.

You can buy passes online or pay in cash when you get there. They have a single day riding and camping pass for $25 per person (as of 5/2016), or you can pay $10 per person to ride for the day (12 & under are free).

Lastly, make sure you call and reserve your dough (not kidding) at Comfort Pizza in town. Its some of the best pizza we've had, but when they are out of dough they are done for the night!

Reviews

There are some pretty decent trails in and around San Antonio. Flat Rock puts them all to shame. The trails are well maintained and the terrain ranges from easy to quite technical. Definitely worth the drive.
