Camp near Lost Lake (in the Red Feather Lakes area)

Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Description

Added by Ryan Mckinney

The Red Feather Lakes area offers amazing disbursed camping, beautiful views, and everything else you need for a relaxing weekend.

I need to start by saying I stayed here on Memorial Day weekend, a very busy camping weekend in Colorado. Online searches for a suitable campsite were useless, everything was booked. It is hard to drive 2 plus hours to an area and hope you find a place for dispersed camping. Thankfully a friend told me about this area. There are lots of dispersed campsites here. You have your pick of camping near a creek, by small lakes, or tucked back in the trees. Even on this very busy weekend, there were several spots that were not used.

This area is good for any type of camping. I saw campers, 5th wheel trailers, and tents. One of the things that I liked about this area is that anyone can go here. There are spots you would need high clearance 4x4, and others that are accessible by car.

The campsites are elevated from the water and around 100 feet(ish), so make sure you “leave it better than you found it”. It is dispersed, i.e. no facilities, pack in what you pack out, etc.

There is lots of wildlife viewing opportunities. We had osprey flying overhead looking for fish and had 3 moose walk next to our camp! There are also  elk, deer, black bear, foxes, bald and golden eagles to name a few.

Town is about 45 mins away from this area, so if you forget anything there is no need to panic.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Make sure to check and see if there are any fire bans. It is a great idea to talk with the ranger station about any fire restrictions.
  2. Do you part to keep bears wild. When there are bear attacks because someone was being irresponsible, the bear will be put down. Be Bear Aware
