Camping on Roosevelt Lake Overlook
Young, Arizona
Description
Added by Colton Marshall
A secluded campsite high above Roosevelt Lake on a flat overlook. Amazing vistas nestled at the foot of the Sierra Ancha Mountains.
Stumbled upon this phenomenal spot while dual-sporting through the Sierra Ancha range.
Turning off 188 the Globe-Young Highway winds down into a valley and crosses the Salt River before passing some small homesteads and farms. It then climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Ancha mountain range. Approximately 13 miles past the bridge Nf 140 turns off to the left. Drive down it a bit and the road comes to a fork. To the right is an easily accessible flat and rocky campground with nice views. To the left is the road climbs up to a flat overlook. The camp to the left is the better of the two, it offers better views and a larger camping area. However beware of the road to the left if it has rained recently because a large and deep mud pit can form.
Tips:
Because these sites can be rocky be sure to pack a comfy mattress or sleeping pad.
Because of the exposed nature of this area be sure to stake out any shelters to compensate for any strong winds.
Mind the edge! The overlook drops sharply off in many places.
A Walmart is only 20 minutes away, a perfect place to stock up on supplies if needed.
This is a very secluded and primitive camping area. A hidden gem. There are no facilities so please pack out all of your waste, let's keep this spot beautiful.
Continue up the Globe-Young Highway to explore the Sierra Ancha mountains. There are plenty of trails and wonderful camping spots higher up in elevation.
Unique Idea:One of the unique opportunities afforded by an open and secluded site is skeet shooting. Pack in a box of clay flyers, a thrower, and some shotguns for a fun time shooting clays as they soar out over the canyon. Wear protective eyewear and earplugs and follow all firearm safety guideline. Be sure to pack out any spent shells.

Reviews
We drove up to the campsite and were in awe. The main road splits into three roads that are a few hundred feet long, all leading to different cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake (I took the left one). The campsite was a little windy, but overall wonderful. There were a few fire pits set up around the site. I went on a Tuesday night and only saw two cars driving far in the distance in a 30 hour time span. I tried to calculate the height of the sharp cliffs surrounding the sites and got around 800-900 feet straight down. If you bring your kids make sure that they are careful.

I have been going here for years! Definitely one of my favorite places that is closer to Phoenix. Recommend it for everyone, very amazing views. While you are there head up to Young and check it out.
