Charlestown, Rhode Island
Description
Added by Chris Mongeau
Enjoy ocean camping with close close proximity to every southern RI state beach. This is the best area to surf in RI and there are other activities available with a kayak rental and ferry access to Block Island nearby. Note: any camping must be done in a self contained RV with potable, black and grey water holding tanks. Bathroom equipment must be permanently affixed to the unit. Tent camping is NOT permitted.
Rhode Island is nicknamed the Ocean State for a reason, and camping by the coast is something absolutely necessary while in New England. During the summer and early fall, Charlestown, RI, as well as the surrounding beach towns, come alive with tourists from all over the globe. The Breachway Campground is located within Burlingame State Park, one of the most popular and worthwhile parks in RI to visit. Burlingame is 3,100 acres of rocky woodland that surrounds Watchaug Pond in Charlestown. The entrance to the park headquarters and camping area is off U.S. Route #1 in Charlestown, RI. For information and site reservations, you can call 401-322-7337 or visit here. The campground fills up quickly in the summer months, so reservations are best if possible.
The Breachway Campground is for self-contained vehicles (campers/cars, sorry, tent folks) with potable, black, and grey water holding tanks. Bathroom equipment must be permanently affixed to the unit. Burlingame State Park has fire pits, and fires may also be built on the beach with a permit. The Breachway is essentially just a devoted part of the beach for campers with RV's or mobile camp setups to stay, which is actually hard to come by in RI. There are no bathrooms at the Breachway Campground, but there are facilities in the state park. If you have an RV set up, this is a great place to stay for a week, but car camping is best for a night or two, since there are no showers/toilets at the location.
Rhode Island is a small state, but it's packed with so much to see. If you plan to camp at the Breachway Campground, some places worth checking out in the area include Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, which you can read more about here, Narragansett, and Newport for more beaches and outdoor activities. From Galilee beach in Point Judith, ferry service runs to Block Island, a great place for a day trip during your stay. Schedules are located here.
