Climb and Camp at Shuteye Ridge
Bass Lake, California
Description
Added by Josh Currie
Shuteye Ridge is an epic outdoor climbing wilderness area just outside of Yosemite. Very few people and beautiful climbing for all levels.
The Journey to your final destination can get a little tricky once you get on the dirt roads. From the Bay Area it will take you about 3 hours to get into Oakhurst, then another hour to get to the Wilderness Area simply because of the windy and not maintained roads. On that note I would suggest taking a car with a decent amount of clearance. You won't necessarily need a 4x4 but I would suggest it just in case.
Once you get to the little camping area, which isn't a campsite, just more of a dirt area with a few pull outs, you can camp wherever you please! Some people will camp right next to their cars but I suggest hiking up the hill a little ways and finding a nice niche of your own.
For those who have been to Yosemite, the topography and overall scenery is the exact same, just no people and a little smaller monoliths. Now this is widely known as a rock climbing area but of course that is not the only thing you can do here. There are endless areas to explore, peaks to summit, and beauty to take in. But for those who are interested in some good sport and lead climbing, this areas is very popular for that!
There is a good range of difficulty for beginners and for the hard core climbers, including a 5.14, if that's something you're into. You can pick up the "Shuteye Ridge Guide Book" at REI which will be very helpful for exploring the area.
There is not a great water source nearby so I suggest bringing in your own water. You should essentially treat this spot as car camping.

Reviews
Like Josh said - the road is pretty rough, high clearance for sure and 4WD ideally. But the drive is worth it...really great climbing, not a ton of people but a good, friendly vibe. Plenty of nice dispersed camp sites, but no fires unfortunately. We brought a crew of a mix of experienced climbers and some who had never climbed before and we were able to find routes that everyone could get up on and have a good time.
