Description

This old firetower is about 1.5 miles from the pull off, or parking area, at mile 408 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is not in use anymore, and the platform is locked, but beautiful panoramic views can be seen from the top of the stairs. I've heard tell of the sunrise views off the tower, but you'll contend with fog in early hours.

This is an extremely easy trail with a minimal incline. The tower, built in 1941, standing 70 feet above the summit, can be nerve wracking, even for those who aren't scared of heights.  However, most feel it's worth the view. Expect to see fellow hikers. On pretty days there can be a few people waiting at the base of the tower for their chance to climb the stairs.

Definitely worth the stop! The hike isn’t very long or strenuous and the views are hard to beat. I highly recommend adding this detour on your route through the BRP.

This is a great place to stop along the parkway. The parking here is limited though so be careful when pulling off the road.

Fairly easy trail just off the Parkway with nice views from the tower.

Make certain to only make the trip on a clear day as I've hiked up to the fire tower only to see sheets of white. However, on a clear day, the views are incredible. I'd recommend watching the sunset over Pisgah National Forest.
