Climb Hanging Garden's on Gardner's Wall

Scottsdale, Arizona

Description

Added by Joseph Gulizia

A great trad climb for beginners, or a wonderful way to warm up in the Gardner's Wall area off of Tom's Thumb.

This is a 2 pitch 5.6 trad climb. About 130 feet in total.

Access the Hanging Garden's climbing area off of the Tom's Thumb Trail. About half way up the trail you will see signage for "Rock Climbing Access Route." On the sign you will see an arrow pointing towards Gardner's Wall. This is the direction you want to take. Following the path, it will drop you down into a field of boulders. Scramble up and over these boulders to continue along the trail. It will take you through a boulder cave, and then a couple more minutes up until you are at the base of the climb.

The climb starts below the large, right leaning flake in the middle of the wall. If you have a guide book, it is the climb directly left of Brusin' and Crusin'. The giant flake is hard to miss.

Pitch 1: Scramble up the left-angling ramp to the base of the flake. Get onto the wall and you will climb diagonally to the left up the crack until it changes to the right. Follow that crack up and to the right to the 2-bolt hanging belay. This is all about 100 feet.

Pitch 2: From the belay take the crack heading diagonally to the right. Follow it straight up to the top, where you will find an easy crack heading up to the left. Take that and you will be finished with your climb. This pitch is about 130 feet.

Decent and Protection: Small to medium cams, doubles of #1-3. Could use a #4 near the top of pitch 2 for extra safety. For the decent you can either rap down to climbers right using a single 70m rope, with stopper knots. Using this, you will be on a different route than the one you came up. If you want to head down the same climb, you will need two double rope raps back down to the base.

Have a fun climb! Bring extra water and sunscreen. Try to do this early on, as in the afternoon this wall is quite exposed, and there isn't much vegetation for cover. Please use the leave no trace principles when climbing here!
