Climb the bluffs along the water's edge, and watch the Long Island surfers from above.
I've never actually been into the Shadmoor State Park, but you can climb up and onto the bluffs from the beach easily; well kind of easily.
Most of the parking lots along the beach require Hamptons residency tags, so you can't park right next to beach entrances... bummer. We typically park along Surfside Ave. near the beach access. From there you can easily walk along the water till you get to the bluffs after you take a dip.
Climbing this requires you to look at the cliff wall and decide whether it looks like a stable path for you to climb. You will probably see sketchy wooden staircases up the bluffs, but these are private property. Once you find a spot that seems good, go for it! It's not too difficult to get up since it's not a straight vertical, but you might get your hands dirty.
Once you get up, everything is easy. You can walk along the edge and overlook the water. In Montauk there are bound to be some surfers, so stop and stare for a bit. You can walk all the way to Ditch Plains (a pretty well-known surf spot) and watch them as well; or go surfing yourself!
