Uplands Hiking Trail along Barnes Gulley is a magical—albeit wet—hike through beautiful upstate-New York greenery.
Onanda Park is a great place for large groups and family get-togethers—there's a lake to swim in, fields open for sports, trees for hammocks, lots of parking spaces, and trash receptacles and bathrooms nearby—but don't stop there! Right across West Lake Road is the entrance to Barnes Gulley, a beautiful, green jungle that follows the path of Barnes Creek.
Follow the creek as far as you want, but about one mile in you'll reach the iconic waterfall. Bring your swimsuit to swim in the pool at the bottom! Also, wear sandals or water shoes and prepare to do a bit of scrambling—the trail is, at times, just walking right through the creek, so watch your step and don't slip! There are also sections where you may need to scramble up rock shelves or dirt banks. Most of these locations are fairly well trafficked, so there are hand and foot holds worn into the ground.
While exploring, keep an eye out for wildlife! There are lots of frogs here, some small fish, and a few small mammals, not to mention all of the beautiful fauna. Even though the trail is fairly close to the road, you will feel like you are miles away from civilization.

Reviews
This is a hike that I will always remember. We climbed past the waterfall & up along the creek for quite a while—it just kept getting more beautiful and we kept finding more things to explore! When I say we, I only mean about 1/4 of our original group; a lot of them didn’t come prepared with the right kind of shoes. Bring your heavy-duty water shoes or adventure sandals like Chacos or *rubber-soled* (not foam-soled) Tevas. Next time I go I plan on setting aside more time to explore even deeper up the gulley :)
