Explore Canyon Road
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Description
Added by Jared Blitz
In a stretch of just half a mile, experience over one hundred fine art galleries
Canyon Road in Santa Fe New Mexico, is home to one of the largest gatherings of fine art galleries featuring original work you'll find. Santa Fe is considered the 3rd largest distributor of art in the world, behind New York and Paris.
The difference with Canyon Road is the unique environment that surrounds it. Much of the work is installed inside beautiful adobe buildings with a mountain landscape for a backdrop. There are also dozens of outdoor galleries full of sculptures. Because Santa Fe prefers to have more flair than a sterile look, each adjacent gallery has its own way of expression. The buildings themselves could be considered art with the various southwest color trim and rustic doors. If you're tired of sculptures and paintings you'll also find yourself immersed in other types of creative ways people express themselves, as well as fine jewelry.
Along the road you will find multiple places to eat and drink, so don't despair. It isn't all art. However, it is mostly art, so expect long lines if you're looking to eat on the block during lunch or dinner.
Go early and expect to spend a full day, maybe even two, if you enjoy art.
The pandemic has obviously taken its toll on what is open and what isn't, as well as the overall feel of what it's like to be on Canyon Road when it's bustling, but it's a can't miss experience if you're looking for a little fun in the high desert that doesn't involve hiking.
