Check out this beautiful and historic park just minutes from downtown Knoxville!
This park is located in south Knoxville right off of Cherokee trail road. The parking lot is very large and can accommodate 15-20 cars. The park is home to the historic Fort Higley which was a Civil War fort built by the Union to protect Knoxville.
This is a great place to walk or run through the woods and to learn about local history. The trail is paved the entire way and is mostly flat making it a great place for a run or to just walk through nature. The trail is 1 mile to the fort making the whole thing 2 miles long so not too terribly far but good enough to be a good workout. At the end of the trail is where the fort stood and a nice grassy field which would be good for a picnic or a nice place to rest after a run. Along the trail there are various information centers where you can learn about the history of Knoxville and the history of Fort Higley. Make sure to check out the dirt trails that show where the artillery would have been at the fort.
