Unique and expansive views of the iconic Monument Valley await you from Hunts Mesa!
Though there are many unique viewpoints from within and around Monument Valley, none is as grand as the view from Hunts Mesa! Not easily accessible, the only way to get to Hunts Mesa is through an authorized tour guide via a ~2 hour off-road drive around the backside of the mesa. Even if you did have the off road vehicle equipped to make the rough ride up the backside of Hunts Mesa, you would be better off letting the guide service's vehicle get beat up; it is not a smooth ride by any means! It is truly an adventure getting up to the top of Hunts Mesa and the views experienced are well worth it once you reach the top. To see sunrise or sunset from atop Hunts Mesa, you will need to do an overnight camping trip with a local guide service (or ask REALLY nicely and see if you can pay extra for a guide to make the off road trip in the dark before sunrise or after sunset). There is not much to do once you get to the top of Hunts Mesa, aside from admiring the views, capturing the sunrise/sunset with your camera, and enjoying the time with the people you are with.
It is also possible to hike from the floor of Monument Valley up to the top of Hunts Mesa, making the a 1,200' ascent. Going the hiking route, you will still need to arrange an authorized guide to join you.
