This cavern cenote is the perfect spot for a jump and a swim in the crystal clear waters.
A cenote is a a natural sinkhole that appears when bedrock collapses and exposes groundwater beneath. The exposed water can be above ground, or in a series of underground caves and rivers. The Yucatan Peninsula is somewhat known for cenotes, and a trip to the area isn't complete without a swim in one.
There are a ton of different cenotes on the peninsula, so the key is choosing which ones you want to visit. I prefer the underground cavern cenotes, and there are many to choose from.
Kin-Ha is an excellent choice, and is located on the Ruta de las Cenotes just outside of Puerto Morelos. If you are staying in a resort in Cancún, Kin-Ha is only about a 30 minute drive away.
You can get there a few different ways. You can rent a car and drive the Route yourself, or you can probably take a group taxi called a collectivo. I rented a car, and enjoyed the freedom to stop at multiple cenotes on the way.
As you drive the Route de los Cenotes, you will pass signs for many different cenotes. Keep going until you see signs for Kin-Ha.
When you arrive, there is a restaurant and ticket booth. Admission is around $20 per person, but they take cards. Once inside, you can swim in the cenote as long as you like. You can enter by jumping though a hole into the water below, or by climbing down a set of wooden stairs to the water. There are also picnic tables, bathrooms, and areas to change.
Kin-Ha can get crowded, and it's a little touristy, but for good reason. If you are looking for a quiet cenote, this one probably isn't for you. However, the cave is spectacular, and definitely worth the visit.
