Legend has it, this lake was once cooler. One day, a girl named Kuiarau was bathing and then a taniwha (dragon) dragged her below the lake. Angered, the gods boiled the lake so the taniwha would never return and to this day the lake and the steamy area around it is named after her.

You won't miss out on geothermal activity when you're in Rotorua because it's EVERYWHERE. Seriously, you'll get a good sniff sooner or later. Especially when you see the hot springs and mud pools conveniently right in Rotorua's CBD! Be sure to walk a couple minutes west to check out this free park. Kuirau Park is located off Pukuatua and Ranolf streets.

At the end of your walk, dip your feet in some free foot baths (but not too late, they get emptied out. Also, a full body bath is not advised.)

The park has a large space! Plenty of parking, open fields for sports, a great park for kids of all ages, and of course the main attraction... these awesome geothermal pools.

P.S. If you're there on a Saturday morning - check out the market! (You won't miss it.) There's a range of local produce and many options for food.
