Saksun, Faroe Islands
Saksun, Faroe Islands
Description
Added by Adrien Patanè
Verdant green, grassy slopes with an unbelievably scenic village clinging to a steep mountainside, overlooking a stunning fjord, Saksun is a picture-perfect destination in the Faroe Islands.
Complete with a picturesque church and dating back to the 1700's with just 14 inhabitants this tranquil village on the island of Streymoy is a must see for any visit to the Faroe Islands.
Accessed via the mainly single-lane Hvalvíksvegur, you'll climb through a gorgeous green valley (in summer) flanked by countless waterfalls and an infinite number of sheep to a car park where you can then venture on foot to explore this magical destination.
You'll first encounter a cluster of particularly photogenic grass-roofed structures which sit at the base of a number of pretty waterfalls falling from a steep mountainside. From here you can explore the main cluster of huts and Dúvugarður farm further North. A path begins here that - if followed - will climb steeply, taking you over a rugged ridge to the unbelievably scenic village of Tjørnuvík. This is considered to be one of the best hikes in the Faroe Islands. However much like many of these attractions they are highly weather dependent and fog - more often than not - may crash your party.
Heading west of the Saksunar Kirkja (Church), which warrants a visit to its flowery flanked hillsides, you can then wander down to the base of the fjord and explore this pretty lagoon admiring the existentially cute houses built overlooking this epic location.

Reviews
Saksun is a picturesque place that should be on your list of places to visit when you visit the Faroe Islands. But please stick to the official marked trails and respect private property as when I was there last time, the locals told me how they are getting very tired of people stepping over fences for photos.
