Description

Added by Jake Sells

Visit a historic lighthouse and fort in South Portland to warn sailors and ships coming into the port of a dangerous ledge that extended into the main shipping channel.

Being a less popular lighthouse out of the many in the greater Portland area, parking is easy and crowds are limited. Parking at Fort Prebble is ideal for a short walk to the lighthouse.

Completed in 1897, off the shoreline of Fort Prebble, Spring Point is a unique lighthouse with huge importance to the entry of the channel, of at the time, one of the busiest ports on the East Coast.

Definitely a camera necessary trip. Also catch local fisherman off the breakwater trying their luck on the fish that call Portland Harbor their home.

This is such a fun little lighthouse. You can walk down the rock pathway all the way to it if you would like, or stay at the shore. You do have to hop the rocks to get there, but they are very sturdy. Don't let the pictures fool you, it does take a little bit to get all the way down. Definitely worth the stop!

Spring Point was one of our favorite lighthouses on the coast of New England. It is quite interesting to visit the small museum inside and the walk on the water is very refreshing.

I’ve always seen pictures of this rock way out to the Lighthouse but I did not expect everything to be so much bigger than they seem on pictures! Very enjoyable time! The fort right next to the trail is good for pictures as well!
