Explore the Frozen Waterfalls of Spearfish Canyon
Spearfish, South Dakota
Description
Added by Jake Young
Explore frozen waterfalls within the towering limestone cliffs of the scenic Spearfish Canyon.
There are a multitude of frozen waterfalls throughout Spearfish Canyon. Some require a short hike and others can be seen from the road. This adventure will describe how to access the three largest frozen falls.
Take Spearfish Canyon Highway south out of the town of Spearfish SD. After roughly 6 miles, there will be a pullout on your right and a small wooden deck on the other side of the street. From this deck, you can view the 60 ft tall Bridal Veil Falls. Depending when you visit, this waterfall is usually completely frozen and is frequently visited by ice climbers.
Another driving another seven miles up the road you will encounter the place name, Savoy. This area is at the confluence of two canyon systems and houses the beautifully constructed Spearfish Canyon Lodge. To access Little Spearfish Falls, park at the Latchstring Restaurant. The trail is just behind the restaurant. The trail descends down into the creek after cross a steel bridge.
To access Roughlock Falls, park at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. There is a trail that goes out of the south end of the parking lot. Follow this trail for roughly a mile and you will find yourself at the falls.

Reviews
All the described waterfalls are easily accessible! Little Spearfish Falls is one of my favorites in the Hills, because you do have to hike to get to it, but you can stand near the top of the falls as well if you don't want to hike to the base. Fun spots to go and explore in the winter!
