Short hike (.25 miles) with a rewarding 360º view. Part of a day trip through scenic Cumberland River Valley. One of the best places to catch fall foliage in Kentucky. Off the beaten path to not get over-crowded.

Located just north of the Cumberland Gap, Chained Rock is a local landform made unique by a long slung chain that comes with a tall tale of it's creation. According to legend the rock pinnacle overlooking the Cumberland River valley struck fear into the minds of young children, which was eased with the claim that it was safely held back by a chain. Word spread, and people came far and wide to see the boulder held by a chain. Seeking an opportunity to promote the small town, the Chamber of Commerce, a local Boy Scout Troop and the Kiwanis Club organized an event to "replace" the original chain with a heftier one. Since that day, the chain has spanned a 100 foot gap between the ridge and the rock.

This is one of the best, if not most unique views of Western Appalachia. It is a prime viewing spot in southeastern Kentucky to view fall foliage. Facing east, you can catch incredible fall vistas with vibrant leaves in the afternoon just before sunset.

Just a quarter-mile south of Pineville KY from Route 25E is a Asher-Clear Creek Rd. Head west for about 1200 ft, and the entrance to Pine Mountain State Resort Park is on your right. The park road winds to the top where you take a right onto Chained Rock Rd. At the end is a small parking lot. The marked trail is less than a quarter-mile out and back, providing sweeping views of the valley and mountains beyond. This is a great place to sit and watch the rolling clouds over a 360º view!

There isn't much in Pineville after the hike, unless you want to take a gamble. On your way back to I-75, stop in Corbin and hit up the The Wrigley Taproom & Brewery. It's inside an old store and there beer list is pretty incredible for a rural Kentucky establishment!

This is a great short hike with amazing views. This is a really cool place to check out and hike around. The story behind it is neat too.

This is a relatively short hike with some serious rock scrambling to get out to the chain but it is worth it. The views are amazing and that giant chain is pretty great.

such a beautiful view (be careful) and a sweet little town :)

ther are some slick rocks to go up if its rainy but its a very fun little trail.
