Explore the Trollstigen

Rauma, Norway

Description

Added by Matthew Eaton

The Trollstigen (Troll's Footpath) is a famous section of Norway's Highway 63 and features 11 hairpin turns as it switchbacks up a mountain at more than 10% steep grade. It's a fun adventure that features beautiful views from the top and is a must see if you are visiting the western fjords of Norway.

The nearest town is the very picturesque Åndalsnes, which lies at entrance of the large Isfjorden along the Rauma River, and is about a 5 and a half hour drive from the capital city of Oslo.

Immediately upon turning onto Highway 63, a beautiful valley begins to open up in front of you as you enter deeper into the mountains; this is the Trollstigen National Tourist Route. The also famous Trollveggen is within the mountains to your left, which is the largest vertical rock wall in Europe at over 3,000 ft in height, and is a common spot for rock climbing and base jumping. Continue driving to the far end of the valley where you will begin to switchback up the 11 hairpin turns of the Trollstigen.

You’ll pass a large waterfall and there is an area to park for those seeking photo opps along the roadway. Once you reach the top, the views are stellar. There is a visitors center with lots of information and also a walking path to overlooks that hang on the side of the mountain.

Additionally, for the more adventurous, there are some day hikes/climbs that leave from a trail at the visitors center which allow you to view the Trollstigen and the entire valley from a lofty viewpoint.

Enjoy the views!

NOTE: vehicles longer than 41ft or 12.4 meters are prohibited.

It goes without saying that you'll want to bring your camera on this adventure as the views from the top of this
