Explore Vestrahorn
Stokksnes, Iceland
Description
Added by Lisa Bao
Vesturhorn is located 12 km (7.4 mi) east of Höfn and offers amazing views of dramatic landscape. This is a great spot to break out your camera or simply sit back and admire the scenery.
Vesturhorn, often called "Batman Mountain," is a beautiful mountain (454 m/1450 ft high) where very steep cliffs meet a flat, black sand beach. Come here to photograph the dramatic landscape, or just sit and enjoy the vast beauty. Recently, there have also been some climbing routes set up on the steeper cliffs.
To get here, drive east on Ring Road, passing the town of Höfn. After 7 km (4.3 mi), turn right onto an unmarked dirt road just before the tunnel (use the satellite view on Google Maps). Follow this road for about 5 km (3.1 mi) and you'll see the amazing mountain of Vesturhorn extending out into the Atlantic Ocean.
When you're done admiring the beauty of this area, drive back to Höfn to get some delicious lobster at Kaffi Hornið. Don't forget to stop along the way to say hello to the friendly Icelandic horses on the side of the road.

This has to be one of our favorite spots in Iceland! As scenic in Summer as in Winter when snow adds sugar to the mountains.

This is one of the best spots in Iceland, and also one of the most popular for landscape photographers. I captured one of the best photographs of my life here in the winter with an incredible show of the northern lights above the peak: http://jasonjhatfield.com/nature/gz3s8luzgwd59swgeku2nd5q62rfnt
