Exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway on the Way to Asheville, NC

My girlfriend and I spent an action packed day driving, exploring, and photographing the Blue Ridge Parkway on our way into Asheville, North Carolina.

My girlfriend and I have never been to North Carolina, but we have heard so many good things about Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains that we were incredibly excited when we got the chance to check it out. We knew that the Blue Ridge Parkway was a famous drive. One full of epic views and scenic hikes. We still weren't prepared, however, for just how beautiful the entire drive was. Not to mention the road is immaculately maintained - many other places in the country could learn from this!

Our morning started off early as we headed into the fog and cloud-filled mountains. At times, we couldn't see on the road in front of us and we were beginning to get worried that we wouldn't have a chance to see any of the views.

To add insult to injury, it began to rain pretty heavily as we stopped off for our first hiking destination. We decided to stop off at Devil's Courthouse viewpoint and see if the rain and clouds would pass with some time. We know in the mountains and higher elevations the weather can change pretty regularly, so we decided to just relax and see what was in store.

Luckily for us the weather passed and we got the sunshine window we were hoping for! We headed back to the Art Loeb Trailhead and made our way out to the clearings. This trail was beautiful with such minimal effort, it was really a treat. Sweeping views in all directions and incredible clouds filling the sky!

After this trail we were feeling so good about our morning and weather we decided to just play the rest of the drive by ear and stop as we pleased. We found some wonderful overlooks and beautiful photo opportunities.

It's worth noting that this road is famous for many scenic tunnels.

Our day ended just as the the afternoon sun was hitting hard and we were feeling pretty hungry. We exited the highway, which was perfectly mowed and maintained, just in time to head into Asheville for some great food and brews. The town was the perfect place to enjoy a food and drink lover's afternoon after a long morning of walking and sightseeing.
