Float the Mad River near Springfield
Springfield, Ohio
Description
Added by John Clairmont
Whether you kayak, tube, or canoe, this peaceful section of the Mad River is perfect for you!
This section is perfect for the beginner river adventurer or a family with little ones. It is only 2.5 miles long, and is extremely calm and pretty. Depending on river levels and speed, it should take around 60-90 minutes to complete (kayak/canoe). There are also several shores along the way for you to stop and switch up seating arrangements or eat a lunch!
This adventure starts and ends at Mad River Adventures, who provide all necessary equipment and shuttling at a reasonable cost. I recommend calling and booking in advance, and be sure to arrive a half hour ahead of your reservation. Pets are no longer allowed if you go through MRA. If you prefer to bring your own kayak/canoe/tube they will shuttle it for you for a small fee. The spot on the river you will be shuttled to for their 3 mile river trip (really it is just over 2.5 miles) is just off Lower Valley Pike at 39.915391, -83.880857.
You can also float the river on your own without going through a company, just be sure to have transportation and all the proper registrations in order before you start! You are allowed to fish in the Mad River, so this option opens you up to bring your own gear and spend as much time as desired at any point along the river.

Reviews
I've lived by this river the majority of my life and just recently decided to go for it! The river itself was really pretty - the water was fairly clear, trees extended over the water, and we saw lots of turtles along the way! There were lots of other people out canoeing, kayaking and tubing, but it wasn't hard to sail ahead and get to quieter areas. Next time I go I'll plan to bring a picnic lunch - there were tons of good places to pull over for a meal!
