A Washington mountain lake that is fly fishing only and offers a cozy campground for late afternoon naps between hatches.
Surrounded by old growth forest, Merrill Lake near Cougar, Washington is the perfect little gem to get in some late summer, mid-elevation mountain lake fishing. The morning and evening hatches are known state wide for the size of fish they attract. There are stories of Eagles even stealing trout right off the line!
This is a Fly-Fishing, catch and release lake only. Come for the early morning hatch and plan to pick one of the (9) campground spots to cook lunch, take a nap and get back out on the lake for the prime evening hatch. The early mornings starting at 5am, the lake is calm and perfect to take the kayak or canoe out (Non-motor boats only) and head toward the north shore for hungry trout. Usually by 10am, the wind starts to pick up and so do the crowds. This is a very popular lake for swimmers, kayakers, and paddle boaters.
There is also a short nature trail near the boat launch that walks through old growth and is great way to learn more about the area and the old-growth forest including Douglas-fir and Western Hemlock. There is no access to hike around the entire lake.
Grab a discover pass and head to the lake!
