Gustavus

Nagoonberry Loop Trail is a loop trail that takes you great forest setting located near Gustavus, Alaska.

The trail meanders through an intertidal lagoon, a spruce & hemlock forest, and ends at the Bartlett estuary. In the summer, expect to see otters, eagles, seals, moose, and bears. In the late summer, salmon run up the Bartlett River which attracts harbor seals. The trailhead is 1/2 mile up the road from Glacier Bay Lodge and Visitor Center. 

The trail is primitive, and is best for experienced hikers hoping to find a bit of solitude and amazing views in Glacier Bay National Park. About 3/4 down the Bartlett River Trail, the trail splits. Veer left to go on the Bartlett Lake Trail. 

Benches line the trail, strategically placed at scenic viewpoints. The Forest Loop Trail is primarily used for hiking, and is best used from March to October. The trail features amazing wild flowers and is great for all skill levels. The trail can be accessed from the lodge or from south of the boat ramp, between the docks.

This trail is a great spot for viewing minke whales, killer whales, humpback whales, and bald eagles. On clear days, the trail features great views of the Fairweather range. 

Bartlett Cove Forest Loop Trail is a loop trail where you may see beautiful wildflowers located near Gustavus, Alaska.

Depending on how you arrive to Gustavus, (which may or may not be the most difficult part of this adventure) you'll want to head to the Visitor Information Center at Bartlett Cove within the park to grab a free camping permit if you are there during the summer season and to sit through an orientation training. If you're like me and go in the off-season, a permit and the training aren't required...

There are many things to do at Icy Straight Point!  You can explore the rocky beach by kayak, photograph the pier, or skip rocks on the glassy surface. The water here is extremely calm and is great for paddling.  There are also hiking trails nearby that allow you to explore the mountains. Some trails may require a shuttle that takes you closer to them.

Bessie Creek Trail is an out-and-back trail where you may see local wildlife located near Juneau, Alaska.
