Hume Lake has it all! Tucked away in the Sierras, this little haven has awesome hiking near and around the lake as well, is a great spot to drop a line.
This spot is less than four hours from the Bay Area and offers everything you would ever want to do in the outdoors. The interesting thing about Hume Lake is that it is actually a Middle School and High School camp in the Summer and Winter. That being said, it is not the place to go if you are looking to get some alone time in the woods. But because it's operated by the camp, you are able to use all the amenities there even if you are not a camper.
The fishing is awesome and you can even rent a little fishing boat or kayak if you're looking to get out on the water as oppose to sticking to the shore. There is a great 3.5 mile hike around the lake with awesome little pop out views of the lake. During the winter though you cannot fish, the hikes are still awesome and the area just as beautiful.
Being that the closest city is Fresno I would not suggest a day trip if you are visiting. There are a number of campgrounds around the area if you are looking to camp on the lake (book here) or you can rent one of the local cabins as most are vacation homes for the owners.
There is no service in the area but the camp has literally everything you could need to supply yourself for your stay. There is a small restaurant, general store, gas station, restrooms, and even a Charter School if you fall in the love with the place and want to settle down and raise a family (which definitely happens).
Again, this is not an experience for those trying to escape but there is not a better spot for pure outdoor fun than Hume Lake!

First let's start by saying that this is definitely not a hike but a fun day at the lake. There's lots to do with the family or friends especially if you are camping there. Around the lake less then 3 miles. Prefect for little ones. Although the signs say no bikes on trail people ride there bikes which can be a little annoying. The lake is nothing special for the entrance fee of $35.

Hume Lake feels like a small village that's run by a Christian Camp there. There's a cafeteria, chapel, general store, among other things. I haven't fished there but I imagine it's decent. What this place is not, however, is a quiet escape into the woods. It's pretty much guaranteed that you won't be alone if you visit Hume Lake, no matter what time of year it is.

Hume Lake is a busy place with a active summer camp on one end. Camping is on the west shore and picnickers on the east shore. It actually works out well for the most part with lots of canoes and kayaks out on the water. This is not a quiet escape but if like a summer camp vibe this just might be your cup of tea.
