Description

Added by John Sunich

Located in Dinosaur National Monument Jone's Hole Creek Trail is an easy hike offering scenic desert canyon views, fly fishing, waterfalls, swimming holes, and ancient pictographs.

Starting from the Jone's Hole National Fish Hatchery the trail follows spring fed Jone's Hole Creek 4 miles to its confluence with the Green River. Along the trail you will be treated to scenic views of the desert canyon, wildlife such as bighorn sheep and deer, as well as spectacular fly fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout.

At 1.5  miles from the hatchery there are several places to stop and photograph ancient pictographs at the Deluge Shelter created by the Fremont people over a thousand years ago.

Another half mile further down the trail is the junction with Island Park trail, which offers a bit more challenging side hike to a beautiful waterfall along Ely Creek and some lesser known pictographs for those willing to explore.  The waterfall a short distance from the trail junction is a great place to cool off on a hot day.

There is also the possibility of backpacking to stay at some designated backcountry campsites at the confluence of Jone's Hole Creek and Ely Creek.  Additionally there are more campsites where the trail dead ends at the confluence of Jones Hole Creek and the Green River, however those sites are reserved for boaters during the peak season.

There are trout found throughout the stream however the majority and largest sized fish were found just a short distance from the confluence of the Green River in some deeper pools.  A valid Utah fishing license is required.

This hike is also frequently completed in reverse direction by boaters camped at one of the 4 designated campsites along the Green River.
