Fairly easy, narrow hike that winds through a boreal forest with spectacular scenery and wild berries in the right season.
This trail starts either in the parking lot near the Ash River Visitor Center, or from the Kabetogama Lake overlook. We started from the Visitor Center since we were already there for a ranger program.
The begins with some uphill but soon levels out and is mostly just a rolling trail that winds through the forest. 0.1 miles up the trail you'll reach the intersection and you'll want to continue straight (or right) unless you plan to visit the Lake overlook. From there its a 1.0 mile straight trail that has a 0.7 mile loop on the end. We traveled the loop counter-clockwise but I'm not sure it matters. Great views on the end that overlook the lake! There are also quite a few rocks, which always makes the kids happy as they get to climb up and over them!
If you are there in the summer there's a good chance wild blueberries and raspberries will be in season, and the NPS allows visitors to pick up to 5 lbs per person per day. It was the longest 4 mile hike we've ever done as we kept foraging for berries!
