Overlook the Rio Grande and enjoy spectacular canyon views.
Boquillas Canyon is one of the longest and most beautiful canyons Big Bend has to offer. To get here you will head towards Rio Grande Village from the park's headquarters at Panther Junction. If desired, you can stop at the store in Rio Grande Village to pick up some snacks and beverages before you head out on this scenic hike. Boquillas Canyon Road will take you straight into a parking lot where the road ends and the trailhead begins.
The trail starts by climbing a small cliff where a fantastic view of the Rio Grande awaits you at the top. You may spot some folks across the border horseback riding from the small village of Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico. Also on the top of this cliff you will find perfectly round holes that are actually mortar holes left from ancient Indians that once inhabited the land.
Then start your way down the cliff heading towards the banks of the Rio Grande. As you approach the entrance to the canyon, you may hear the fine singing of a well known local "Jesus the Singing Mexican" as he calls himself. He can often be found on the opposite side of the Rio Grande singing tunes that echo through the canyon making you feel like you are in the heart of Mexico.
As this trail is only 1.2 miles round trip, you have plenty of time to explore the canyon and the banks of the Rio Grande. Additionally, there is a sand dune hill that is located on the left side of the canyon as you enter, and is fun for all ages to climb to the top and slide down!

Reviews
We had hiked all areas of Big Bend on spring break and we're leaving but decided to press on one more hike in the afternoon. We were treated to a shaded scree run and a dip in the Rio. Well worth the effort and met the singing Jeesus.
