Description

A canyon hike into the Carson Forest, with creek crossings and wildflowers.
This moderate trail is accessed from the Columbine campground on Highway 38. It will be on your right side when traveling east from Questa.
Drive to the back end of the campground, where there are several spaces for parking. The moderate version of this hike will travel about 4 miles south into the Carson National Forest, following the canyon and crossing the creek several times.
The trail is wide and well-maintained, tracing through young aspen groves. After 4 miles, it will reach a trail junction with further options to proceed to Lobo Peak or further to Twining.
There is also an option to take this trail and climb to Gold Hill, which is 18 miles roundtrip. Just 1.6 miles from the trailhead, take the trail to the left, which will ascend 4,000 feet over 7 miles. This is a great option for hikers looking for a summit experience and more challenging vista of the area.
