Description

Added by Brian Maley

Hike one of the most spectacular and pristine examples of shale gorge in the region. Explore more than two dozen waterfalls ranging from a few feet to 20+ feet tall. This is a true escape that should be cherished and respected.

Before starting this hike, please make sure you have permission to access Cornell Botanic Gardens

Starting at the parking space on Elm St. Extension, follow the trail downhill until you reach the bed of the creek. The creek becomes the trail at this point, and you will need to navigate it appropriately and safely since the shale is EXTREMELY slippery. Hikers should use extreme caution, and demonstrate good judgement in Coy Glen because once you are in the creek, you will need to find your own safest path to get up and down the many waterfalls.

While challenging for the average hiker, this is a very rewarding place to explore. Hikers should be aware the the glen is within a designated Critical Conservation area, and should be treated with the utmost respect. The hike is about a mile to the bottom of the gorge, and drops over 200m in elevation. Land at the bottom of the gorge is privately owned, and hikers will have to return to the top from the way that they came in order to exit.

Reviews

I've been down here a few times. It's always an adventure, no trail, super slippery and kinds sketchy. But worth it for sure

We followed the creek, which was beautiful. We loved taking this remote and less traveled hike. It's an advanced hike but very doable - you'll probably get your feet wet. Can't wait to go again.
