Description

Added by Lisa Zook

This is a relaxing and easy hike along the longest naturally occurring sand spit in the United States. The trail offers beautiful views of Dungeness Harbor and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Park at a the north side of the Dungeness Spit Recreation Area, in the Refuge parking lot. There is a kiosk at the Refuge where you can pay an entrance fee ($3) and check the Tide Table. Only attempt the hike at low tide or the sand spit becomes narrow and you have to climb over logs.

Follow the Refuge Trail for about 0.5 miles through a forest. You will come to an overlook where you can see the birds-eye view of the spit before heading down to the beach, 100 feet below.

At the end of the spit you will find the Dungeness Lighthouse, built in 1857. Reaching the lighthouse makes the beach hike 11-miles round-trip. If that sounds like too much, you can hike as far as you'd like and turn back anytime. You'll be able to take in the beautiful views from just about anywhere on the spit.

Reviews

Walking the spit is fantastic. Had a great time exploring the rocks and logs and viewing the wildlife. We even spotted a seal just of shore

Cool views! I had a great time, even though the lighthouse was closed it was still cool to take pictures of.

Visit during the winter solstice to see huge waves and scramble over the mountains of driftwood along the spit. It is terribly long, much longer than I expected. Walk to the lighthouse but make sure you don't get stranded!

You can walk the trails before you get to the refuge but that is all. The actual refuge has a big sign No Pets.
