See one of Portland’s top tourist attractions by foot! Easy & dog-friendly hike for families and fitness levels of all kind.
Lower Macleay Park is one of most easily accessible trailheads in the city, especially during one of Portland’s rare snow years where even driving up to 500 feet of elevation can challenge your car. You can park within the park entrance cul-de-sac, around the intersection of Upshur St. & NW 29th St., or even on top of the Thurman Street Bridge and take the stairs down to the trailhead.
The trail starts out slow and gradual before turning into the Wildwood Trail at the Stone House, about 0.8 miles in. Go straight onto Wildwood, continuing alongside the creek, until you reach Upper Macleay Park about 1.4 miles from the trailhead. Cross Cornell Road here and follow the Wildwood Trail the full 2.65 miles all the way to the Pittock Mansion parking lot.
The mansion is a 100+ year old Renaissance-style chateau that has daily tours – and public restrooms, hikers allowed. While you’re there, you’ll want to take some extra time to photograph downtown Portland from the overlook. It is truly one of the best views of the entire city, including Mt. Hood in its entire splendor.
