Description

Added by Jon King

This loop hike offers some of the most stunning scenery in Missouri including the highest point and tallest waterfall in the state.

The hike begins with a paved trail leading to a plaque marking the highest point in Missouri.  Although there is no view here it is still a fun spot to take a picture. Continue back on the main trail until you reach the junction marked by the backcountry camping registration box. Turn right at the junction to hike a counterclockwise loop.

The trail slowly descends through the woods.  As you continue, you’ll intermittently emerge into rocky glades with expansive views of the St. Francois Mountains.

At approximately the halfway point you’ll reach the top of Mina Sauk Falls.  At 132 feet, this cascading waterfall is the tallest waterfall in Missouri.  Here you can scramble down to the bottom of the falls.  This is a wet-weather waterfall running best after a good rain.  The top of the falls also has spectacular views of the surrounding bluffs.

After taking a break at the falls, continue back on the main trail.  You’ll gradually ascend along Taum Sauk Creek.  Continue until you loop back to the trailhead.

The State Park Service suggests to allow 2-3 hours to complete this hike.
