Lake Placid, New York
Description
Added by Lucas Gashi
Short hike with great views! Great hike for sunsets or sunrises. 2.4-2.6 miles roundtrip. Elevation gain ~700 feet.
This short hike offers exceptional views, perfect for late night sunsets and early morning sunrises. Take a lunch date to the summit and enjoy overlooking Heart Lake and New York's highest peak, Mt. Marcy. The trail to Mt. Jo trailhead is located at the enterance station near the parking lot at the end of the Adirondac Loj Rd., just off of Rt. 73. Follow the trail next to Heart Lake for less than 100 yards, turn right to reach the start of the trailhead for Mt. Joe. The trail reaches a junction in which, splits into two trails that reach the summit. Stay right and take the short way if you enjoy a steep and rocky ascent or go straight and take the long way for a more moderate approach to the summit. Either way, the two trails rejoin just before reaching the summit!
Elevation gain: <700 feet
Length: 2.4-2.6 miles round trip
Duration: 1-2 hour round trip

Big views for very little work! We visited toward the end of October as the fall foliage season was winding down. The trailhead parking area was full when we got there at 9 am, but we didn't see a lot of hikers on the trail until we were coming down. By noon, there were cars parked up and down the road for a 1/2 mile! Stunning views of the surrounding high peaks!

Mt. Jo, a favorite of locals and tourists alike, is one of the more easily accessible peaks in the area. It has a beautiful, wide-sweeping view from the top, which is just a short hike up from Adirondack Loj. Be prepared for a busy parking lot on weekends and holidays to access this mountain.

Mt. Jo is a great short hike to expose those not familiar with the Adirondacks to the beauty of the area. As Lucas stated this hike is great for capturing the sunrise and sunset because of the length. Also, when you get to the summit walk over to the left hand side and check out the views facing away from Heart Lake. You can see the town of Lake Placid, the ski jumps, and a little bit of Whiteface.
