Description

I lived in Santa Fe for almost 8 years and this is one of my favorite hikes all year round. Aspen Vista is a popular out and back hike/snowshoe/mountain bike - the local women's cycling club the Pedal Queens is out here often. It is a high-alpine trek up to the summit of Tesuque Peak (12,045 feet).

Aspen Vista Road (Forest Road 150) starts at an elevation of 10,000 feet and climbs up through a large stand of beautiful aspen and pine trees to the summit of Tesuque Peak at an elevation of 12,045 feet (note the Aspen grove is one large living being as all the roots are interconnected). These photos were taken the middle September over a couple of years when the leaves start to change.

The hike is a 12.1 mile out and back trail located near Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is just up the road toward the ski basin and it is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for mountain biking and is accessible from May until October.

I've taken some hikers who live at sea level and it is a bit of challenge for them. Please remember to bring your water. And if you are faint of heart try one of the shorter lower elevation trails like Bear Wallow.

Reviews

Wide trail, beautiful views. Go in late September/ early October. Trailhead gets pretty crowded.

Very pretty hike or more of a stroll. Quite easy.
