Take in the views from Point Imperial, the highest point in the Grand Canyon.
Point Imperial is the highest point in the Grand Canyon, lying in the North Rim, at 8800ft and offering incredible views of staggered mountains. The trail itself is relatively easy. If you're not acclimated to the elevation you'll feel short of breath, but beyond that it mostly takes you through forest areas heavily burned in the 2000 Outlet Fire. It's a surprisingly peaceful place as many tourists prefer to look over the rim rather than hike in the area.
It is possible to connect with the Nankoweap Trail (unsure of the details) and there are outlets to the forest service roads, so you can park at various points along the trail if it's too busy.
Besides hiking, Point Imperial offers great photo opportunities for both sunrise and sunset. If you're going at sunset make sure you bring a flashlight. There aren't any lights along the service roads so darkness is indeed very dark. Watch out for deer and bison on the roads.
It's also a great place for a picnic/lunch if you head up in the afternoon.
